Creative Commons license for OAX standard specifications and documents
The standard documents for OAX (Documentation, UML models, XML schema, WSDL Web Services descriptions) are all licensed under the Creative Commons Attribute - Share alike licence. This license ensures that the documents can be freely distributed and modified, including for commercial purposes, and that improvements go back to the community.
We believe it is the best choice to make sure that the standard and all derivatives remain open and free.
Support or implementation of the OAX standards remains free in any form: commercial software, closed-source or open-source, can freely implement OAX without any constraints on their licensing.
See
Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License for more information.
LGPL license for SOAX open-source components
The software for SOAX is released under the LGPLv2 license. With this license, companies are free to use and modify the software and are guaranteed access to the source code. Modifications of the SOAX components for internal use need not made public (although we encourage it to improve SOAX).
If however a software containing modification to SOAX is released, SOAX modifications must be contributed back to the community. This makes sure that the investment put into free open-source software is rewarded by shared improvements.
On the other hand, the software using the SOAX component never has to be released. It can remain closed-source, making it possible to use SOAX within commercial packages.
See FSF for more information on the LGPLv2 license.
Dual licence scheme for embedding SOAX components in commercial packages
If releasing a package using SOAX components under the GPLv2 license is a problem, commercial licenses are available.
